Endodontics

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the pulp tissue (nerves and blood vessels) located inside the tooth. When the nerve tissue of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, a procedure known as endodontic treatment or root canal treatment is performed. This treatment aims to preserve the tooth by removing the infected or inflamed pulp, cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection.

Treatment Process

    1. Examination and Diagnosis:

  • A dentist can take X-rays and perform a clinical examination to assess the condition of the tooth.
  • They evaluate the vitality of the tooth and the spread of infection.

     2. Anesthesia and Isolation:

  • The treatment area is numbed with local anesthesia.
  • The surroundings of the tooth are isolated to keep the tooth clean and dry.

     3. Opening of the Pulp Chamber:

  • A small hole is drilled at the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
  • Infected or inflamed pulp tissue is removed.

     4. Cleaning and Shaping of the Root Canal:

  • Root canals are cleaned and shaped using specialized instruments.
  • The canal is disinfected to completely eliminate infection.

      5. Filling of the Root Canals:

  • Cleaned and shaped root canals are filled with a biocompatible material.
  • The tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

     6.  Restoration:

  • The top part of the treated tooth is typically covered with a crown.
  • The crown protects the tooth and restores normal function.

Advantages

  • Preservation of the Tooth: Preserves the natural tooth structure instead of extraction.
  • Relief of Pain: Alleviates the pain and discomfort caused by infected or inflamed teeth.
  • Restoration of Function: The treated tooth regains normal chewing and speaking functions.
  • Aesthetic: Maintains the natural appearance of the tooth.
